Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
